Gay marriage is a thing and I'm not worried about it. For all that marriage has done to promote fidelity and good behavior, we might as well legalize marriage for all animals, minerals and vegetables. I know dogs that are just as faithful as some of the married people I know and I don't really care one way, the other way or even that funky third way who gets married and for what reasons. Other people, unlike me though, aren't so pragmatic about the world in which they deposit their waste.
And that's cool too.
I'm glad people have opinions and stick by them and I'm glad I live in a culture where people are free to flaunt their opinions. One of the worst casualties of the American Civil Rights Movement has been the creation of a stupid and false notion that different people deserve different treatment because of how they are colored or who they bang at night. All citizens of this once great nation deserve the same basic rights. Rich, poor, black, white, gay, straight, fans of The Newsroom, critics of The Newsroom, we all get to play in the same sandbox. Goals of our nation should always lean towards protecting all humanity from tyranny and oppression while, at the same time, allowing us to like a trite, melodramatic television show. That's just American.
And so is fried chicken.
And I love fried chicken.
Chick-Fil-A is a restaurant which offers awesome and juicy and delicious fried chicken sandwiches as well as a courteous staff. They are one of the few fast food chains that refuses to open on Sundays (which I can respect but which I find offensive when I'm hungry on Sundays) while offering college scholarships to all current employees who meet certain criteria. Also, they hate gays.
More to the point, they are against gay marriage. And you know what, I'm cool with that. There are a few people out there who actually take their wedding vows seriously. I know, I know, it's crazy. There are men who don't cheat on their wives just because said men are successful and can get away with it; there are women who don't leave their husbands just because they ran out of money. Some people actually hold marriage dearly and they think that gay marriage is wrong and so they speak out and they lobby.
And that's awesome, too.
Once again, this is America. The gays lobby for rights, the anti-gays lobby for beliefs and everyone gets to shout from metaphorical mountaintops how they feel about specific issues. Politicians pretend they have opinions and vote on the side of the folks who give them the most money. Land that I love and all that…
Today, I had Chick-Fil-A for lunch. I had the Number One with a sweet tea. It was delicious. And no, I am not against gay marriage. I'm not really for it, either. I'm just for equality and freedom, neither of which were violated by Chick-Fil-A. I also don't regard the opinions of people who cook my food unless I'm related to them.
I guess my point is (if you wanted to pretend I had any point at all): Chick-Fil-A fried chicken is delicious and I wish they were open on Sundays.
