Deer Court,
I am in constant pursuit of wild life! There is a fresh supply every day since we live in the country with all kinds of deer, turkey, squirrel and rabbits. My companion Shay demands that we take a long walk every day, chasing the wild life we have the good fortune to find. (He is a scent and sight Basenji hound).
My recent dilemma came when Shay stumbled upon an injured doe, fumbling helplessly in the crisp autumn leaves. My first instinct was to carry her to safety and perhaps to a licensed veterinarian, but then I thought of all the struggling hunters in the world who would die for such a beautiful kill!
What I'm wondering is, should I have finished college when I had the chance?
(By the way, the doe meat was delicious! The tenderizer and skewering method you described in your column last week really brought out the full flavor!)
Sincerely,
Really Full but Having Doubts (About College)
Dear Really Full but Having Doubts,
Thanks for your email, glad to hear about the turkeys, squirrels, and rabbits! I hope Shay has recovered from your blatant disregard for humanity. Tell him not to worry, there are “plenty more deer in the forest” so to speak.
To answer your question, yes, you should have stayed in college. But there's always time to go back! Fresh meat abounds and upperclass rush starts in the spring!
(By the way, did your venison dinner have a red, eight-pronged antler tattoo just above her tail? If so, that was my ex! You KNOW, they only get tattoos back there for one reason! Silly does!)
Sincerely,
Court (the deer)
